Rory Devlin,Christian Mc Ginley and Patrick Doherty will definitely be selected for Team North Pole panel in 2009.

Supervet 2008 was won on Sunday last by Carl Fullerton in a hotly contested event. The race was held on an 80k.course in almost ideal conditions and was combined with the SuperTeam Challenge. Some 80 cyclists took part, made up of 9 teams of 8 North Pole cyclists and a handful of visitors. Each team had to get their captain and 4 team-members including one Under 16 cyclist across the line in order to win the SuperTeam event. The field held together for over 30 miles as each team worked hard to support their captains and keep them in position for the finish. After the climb through Ballyliffin it was evident that this was a two horse race as far as the teams were concerned.Fullerton and his lead man Rory Devlin made a break with 8k.to go but were hauled back by Duffy and his tactics experts Robert Carter and Jim Porter.John Doherty(Toner) and 15 year-old Patrick Mc Laughlin(Dick) then went up front to support Fullerton on the last short climb at Minahay and regained control of the race. With sprinter Rory Devlin out front and all men in position it looked as if Fullerton had the team event in the bag. Then with 2k. to go Devlin got a blow-out and the Duffy Team got their lucky break.Toner and Dick both expert finishers did not falter at this setback and started to get their captain in position for the sprint finish.Carter and Porter were not idle and held strategic positions for Duffy to come to the front. Duffy attacked with 300 metres to go and looked like he would take the double. Fullerton counter-attacked with less than 100 metres to go,taking the flag in a spectacular finish.Willy John Mc Laughlin took third position.

Carl wins the sprint at the finish.

The 'Liam O'Donnell Team'came in to take the SuperTeam honours in a very tactical race. They watched the other teams wear each other out and came in to snatch victory and 'The Tip O'Neill Cup' in memory of a famous Irish-American politician. (Thomas P.(Tip).O'Neill's grandmother,Eunice Fullerton left her home close to the O'Donnell farmhouse at Rushfield to emigrate to America 140 years ago.He was to become one of the most powerful politicians in the US in the 1980's and his family still own the farm which Eunice departed from all those years ago, just a short distance from the North Pole Bar)

As Rory Devlin struggled with his flat wheel and called for a replacement, some ten cyclists passed him.Meanwhile Brendan Duffy needed his 5th man,14 year-old Aidan Noone to get home soon. However the O'Donnell team were ahead of him.First Liam O'Donnell then Kieran Eccles,Steven Mc Conalogue and then 5th man Mark Gill came coasting past.As 10 year old Christopher Carter was already home for Liam having completed the short course, all was needed was for Mark Gill to get to the finish ahead of the number 5's for Fullerton or Duffy.Aidan Noone was no match for Gill and Rory Devlin, having got a replacement bike would not make it.Mark Gill was the hero of the day.Liam O'Donnell's highly disciplined team, ranked as outsiders, had won the highly coveted SuperTeam Trophy.Fullerton's team came second punished by Rory Devlin's flat wheel at such a crucial stage of the race.Duffy's team got third place when Aidan Noone came home shortly after Rory.If Aidan had done the short course the result might have been different.BarneyO'Donnell's team got fourth place just ahead of Willy John's team.
This event will certainly be one to watch out for in 2009,which is expected to have twice as many team captains.

.

'Cyclist of the Day' must go to SuperYouth Patrick Mc Laughlin who cycled a tactical race from the start. In the closing stages of the race he and John Toner protected their captain taking him over the line for overall victory in a suberb display of teamwork.

Presentation of trophys will take place at the North Pole CC Christmas Party at The Lake of Shadows Hotel on Friday 12th December.

Well represented.

Good performance by our youth cyclists at the Omagh Wheelers 'Hills of Drumquin' on Saturday last.North Pole adults did OK as well especially Sandra. All were thrilled to meet Sean Kelly one of the worlds greatest cyclists.

Not so well represented.

Special mention must go to Robert Carter for a super performance today at the Bann Wheelers Charity Cycle in aid of the 'Cancer Fund for Childern' organised by Joe Barr. The organisation of this event was second to none and it was a great experience to be there.Should have waited for MM though!....The 65 mile course was very challenging bringing in a multitude of climbs and descents.Joe has indicated that he would like to run a similar event in aid of childrens cancer in conjunction with North Pole CC at the end of February 2009. We will keep that date free Joe.

Four Masters Poison Glen Tour on Sunday 14th September.

Well done to all the North Polers who came out today in extreme weather conditions to help our neighbouring club Four Masters raise funds for a very worthy charity.

'Cyclist of the Day' must go to newcomer Christian Mc Ginley our friendly postmaster.
Sporting his company colours,An Post,Christian covered the 74 mile course well inside 4 hours and was 3rd North Pole member home beaten only by our top racers Paddy Mc Callion and Rory Devlin.
Christian's performance must have been helped by his recent meeting with Mark Cavendish just after he won his third consecutive stage in The Tour Of Ireland last month.(see photo L-R Tommy Burns,Mark Cavendish and Christian Mc Ginley)Christian gets cycling advice.
